gst: don't use volatile to mean atomic
...
volatile is not sufficient to provide atomic guarantees and real atomics
should be used instead. GCC 11 has started warning about using volatile
with atomic operations.

And to make that 100% obvious, only use variables declared within the
switch cases instead of function-wide ones.
Also remove useless one-time-use-only variable.

We would end up with cur_position not set but proceed being at its
default value of TRUE. Instead, properly set proceed to FALSE
